If you’d like to elevate your own message and event experience, I can help! Let’s create something for you to wear that’s unique, creative, and 100% made for you.

Hi friends,

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to a truly remarkable bird: the Red-Knobbed Hornbill! (Wait, the… who?!) If you haven’t heard of these stunningly colorful yet little-known creatures, you’re in for a treat. Native to the lush landscapes of Sulawesi, Indonesia, these birds belong to the same family as the iconic Toucan. With their vibrant plumage and unique features, they are a sight to behold and a source of inspiration for many.

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to dive deep into the world of the Red-Knobbed Hornbill while working on a special project: creating a custom hand-painted dress for Brittany, a dedicated animal caretaker at the San Diego Zoo. Brittany has a passion for these magnificent birds, and she wanted something unique to wear to the Zoo's annual fundraising party last November. Together, we embarked on a creative journey to design a piece that would not only celebrate her love for the Red-Knobbed Hornbill, but also make a statement at the event.

The Design Process for this Bird Dress

From beginning to end, I worked closely with Brittany to come up with the dress of her dreams. The design process always feels like a collaborative effort as I turn the client's thoughts into a wearable, hand-painted reality.

We brainstormed ideas, colors, and themes that would best represent the essence of the Red-Knobbed Hornbill. The final design featured these beautiful birds prominently on both the front and back of the dress, capturing their vibrant colors and distinctive shapes. To further enhance the design, we incorporated elements of their natural habitat, painting intricate details of the greenery and fruits from the fig trees that are essential to their diet and shelter. This not only added depth to the piece, but also told a story about the birds’ environment.

Every step of the way, I made sure to pay attention to the details. From the initial sketches to the final brushstrokes, I wanted to ensure that Brittany’s vision was fully realized. There were a couple of changes requested along the way, and I was more than happy to accommodate them. After all, creating a custom piece is all about collaboration and making sure it feels just right for the wearer.

A Happy Customer

Once the dress was complete and had made its debut at the fundraising gala, I couldn’t wait to hear Brittany’s thoughts. She told me, "I felt absolutely amazing in the piece. When I walked into the event, I was practically itching for someone to come over and examine it. I was able to be the center of a group photo with the other hornbill keepers!" She loved all the conversation and positive attention that her unforgettable bird dress attracted.

Brittany's final review warmed my heart:

"So excited to have such a unique piece in my wardrobe! Kendra was able to capture my vision and created a stunning piece of artwork for me to treasure. She was very patient and open to any suggestions or changes to the piece and consistently checked in to make sure everything was progressing to my liking. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking to create a piece made especially for them!"

Hearing such positive feedback is what makes my work so rewarding:

It’s not just about creating a beautiful garment; it’s about crafting a piece that holds meaning and significance for the person wearing it.
